Road congestion remains a persistent problem in major African cities, causing significant disruption. This situation has long prevailed in metropolises such as Lagos and Accra, while it is more recent in cities such as Ouagadougou. The repercussions of this phenomenon are manifold, adversely affecting health, the environment, the economy and the well-being of local residents.
There is a world-renowned conference such as the Transport Research Arena (TRA), supported by the European Union, which tackles the subject of transport in its entirety. However, the discussions at this event focus mainly on the realities specific to developed countries, such as driverless vehicles, high-speed trains, drone deliveries, vehicles capable of transforming into airplanes and so on. These themes do not necessarily correspond to the challenges faced by African countries, such as the energy deficit, infrastructure shortcomings, governance problems, etc., which are everyday aspects of our reality
Other local African realities, such as two-wheeled means of transport, are often the cause of accidents: for example, according to the statistical yearbook of Burkina Faso’s national police force, 13766 cases of accidents involving two-wheeled vehicles were recorded in 2022. Other local African realities, such as traditional animal-drawn means of transport, anarchic congestion of public roads and the very advanced age of motor vehicles, also need to be taken into account in African transport policies.
